The air in Ash’s apartment felt thick, not with the scent of stale popcorn or the lingering ghost of Andrew’s cologne, but with a potent mix of triumph and sheer, unadulterated chaos. She nursed a lukewarm cup of tea, the ceramic cool against her fingertips, as a slow smile spread across her face. Across the cluttered coffee table, perched on the edge of the sofa like a brightly coloured bird of prey, sat ‘Quirky New Acquaintance’ – or as Ash had affectionately, if a little breathlessly, started calling them, ‘Chaos’. Chaos, whose real name was a string of consonants and vowels that sounded suspiciously like a sneeze, was meticulously polishing a pair of oversized novelty sunglasses with a silk handkerchief.

“So,” Chaos began, their voice a low, melodious hum that belied their spiky, neon-green hair. “The… incident… at ‘The Gilded Spoon’ was, shall we say, *spectacularly* messy.”

Ash chuckled, a low, throaty sound that still held a tremor of the shock and hurt from a week ago. “Messy is an understatement, Chaos. I was aiming for a mild public humiliation, not a full-blown avian-induced food fight.”
