Chapter 2
Operation: Comedy of Errors
Heartbreak transforms into a burning desire for revenge. Ash hatches a wild, comedic plan to expose Andrew and Jessica, enlisting her own brand of chaotic brilliance. The seeds of elaborate pranks are sown.
The sting of betrayal, sharp and raw, had initially threatened to shatter Ash into a million glittering pieces. She’d spent a good twenty-four hours alternating between dramatic sobbing fits, fueled by lukewarm tea and stale biscuits, and a simmering, potent rage that felt like a thousand tiny wasps building a nest in her chest. But as the third cup of tea went cold and the last crumb of biscuit dissolved on her tongue, a new emotion began to bloom, replacing the despair with a peculiar kind of exhilaration. It was the thrill of the hunt, the intoxicating promise of retribution. Heartbreak, it turned out, was a surprisingly fertile ground for a truly magnificent, and hilariously orchestrated, revenge.
She sat at her kitchen table, the offending phone – Andrew’s phone, the one she’d found tucked away in his gym bag, a careless oversight that had detonated her world – lay before her like a venomous snake. The messages, once innocuous enough to pass as friendly banter, now screamed their infidelity in stark, unforgiving text. Jessica’s familiar emoji-laden replies, Andrew’s coded affirmations, all of it coalesced into a picture of deceit so vivid it made Ash’s stomach churn. But instead of dwelling on the sickening details, her gaze drifted to a crumpled napkin beside the phone. On it, in Andrew’s surprisingly neat handwriting, was a list of… ingredients. Flour, eggs, a ludicrous amount of sprinkles, and something vaguely labeled “mystery goo.” It was a shopping list for a baking project, something he’d apparently been planning with Jessica. A knot of disgust tightened in Ash’s throat, but then, a spark. A truly wicked, mischievous spark.
“Mystery goo,” she muttered, a slow grin spreading across her face. “Oh, Andrew. You have no idea what kind of goo you’re about to step into.”
The plan began to form, not in a structured, logical way, but in a chaotic, exhilarating cascade of ideas. It was less a meticulously crafted blueprint and more a series of increasingly outlandish scenarios that played out in her mind’s eye, each one more absurd than the last. She pictured Andrew, his smug face contorted in confusion, Jessica, her usually practiced composure crumbling into disarray. The thought sent a shiver of delight down her spine.
Her first recruit, surprisingly, wasn't a long-suffering friend or a sympathetic relative. It was the barista at "The Daily Grind," the coffee shop she frequented for her now-essential, high-caffeine infusions. He was a lanky young man named Finn, with a shock of electric blue hair that defied gravity and an almost unsettlingly calm demeanor. Ash had noticed him before, his uncanny ability to remember obscure orders and his penchant for wearing mismatched socks. Today, he seemed to emanate a certain… aura. An aura of delightful unpredictability.
“The usual, Ash?” Finn asked, his voice a low, steady rumble, as he expertly frothed milk.
Ash nodded, taking a deep breath. “Actually, Finn, I need something a little… stronger today. And I need your help.”
Finn paused, his hand hovering over the espresso machine. His eyes, the color of a stormy sea, met hers. “Help with what?”
“Revenge,” Ash declared, her voice a little too loud, a little too bright. She lowered it to a conspiratorial whisper. “Andrew and Jessica. They’ve been… busy.”
Finn’s eyebrows, which were surprisingly expressive given his generally placid expression, rose a fraction. “Ah. A classic tale of woe. And you require… a dramatic flair?”
“Exactly!” Ash exclaimed, feeling a surge of connection with this eccentric stranger. “I need someone who understands the art of the… unexpected. Someone who can appreciate a well-placed banana peel, a strategically deployed glitter bomb, a… a really, really loud air horn.”
Finn leaned against the counter, a faint smile playing on his lips. “I confess, Ash, your enthusiasm is… infectious. And my current employment lacks a certain… panache. Tell me more about this ‘art of the unexpected.’”
And so, over a steaming latte and a surprisingly potent double espresso, Ash laid out the nascent stages of her plan. It involved Andrew’s prized vintage record collection, a planned romantic dinner he was supposed to be having with Jessica, and a certain brand of ultra-sticky, neon-green slime Ash had found in the back of a novelty shop. Finn listened intently, his gaze never wavering, occasionally interjecting with a thoughtful suggestion.
“Perhaps,” he mused, swirling his latte, “instead of just slime, we could infuse it with a mild, non-toxic, but incredibly pungent cheese aroma. The kind that lingers. For days.”
Ash’s eyes widened. “Finn, you’re a genius.”
The first prank was deceptively simple, yet perfectly executed. Andrew, ever the showman, had insisted on a grand gesture for Jessica’s birthday – a private picnic in the botanical gardens, complete with a gourmet meal and a playlist of ‘their’ songs. Ash, armed with a carefully doctored Spotify playlist and a thermos filled with what looked like lemonade but was, in fact, a potent, stomach-churning concoction of expired prune juice and extra-strength laxative, made her way to the gardens. She positioned herself behind a particularly bushy rhododendron, her heart thumping a frantic rhythm against her ribs.
As Andrew and Jessica settled onto their checkered blanket, Andrew regaled Jessica with tales of his alleged romantic prowess. Ash waited until they were halfway through their artisanal sandwiches, then
