Chapter 4
Chapter 4: Unraveling the Threads
The narrator enters Level Four of the maze, a corridor covered in writing and notation that represents the roots of her anxiety. She begins tracing the threads back through her childhood — her mother's cryptic phrases, her father's patterns, the rural isolation. A wind blows through the maze carrying green dust, which she associates with memory and time. She follows the threads deeper, confronting how her father's negligence and her mother's distance intertwined to create the anxiety she still carries. The chapter ends with the maze shifting again, the walls closing in, and a new threat emerging as she digs closer to the source.
The corridor breathed.
I don't mean metaphorically — or I do, but only because everything in here is metaphor wearing a lab coat and pretending to be diagnosis. I mean the walls moved. Slightly. In and out. Like lungs. Like the maze itself was alive and I was walking down its throat, which is not the comforting image I'd prefer when I'm already dealing with the aftermath of putting down a blame I carried for two decades.
Level Four. Unraveling the threads.
