Chapter 12

Chapter 12: The Green Sky at the Far End of Time

The narrator, having climbed out of the maze and integrated the lost piece, walks a corridor lined with wall writings that shift between her handwriting and her mother's. She reflects on her deepening relationship with Sirijus as an internal presence rather than a memory. A vision of a distant green sky emerges through the translucent maze walls, connected to the green dust she encountered earlier. She understands this green sky as something far ahead in time, millions of years from now, a state of being she is moving toward rather than rushing to reach. The narrator sits with the calm of someone who has stopped running and begins to write on the walls herself, adding her voice to the record. The chapter ends with her resting against the translucent wall, Sirijus warm inside her, watching the green light deepen.

I should probably be more excited about climbing out of an ice cave in my own subconscious. People pay good money for less. Therapists charge by the hour for the kind of breakthrough I just had, and here I am, standing on metaphorical solid ground, holding the lost piece of myself like a recovered library book — overdue, slightly frostbitten, but returned at last.

The corridor ahead of me looked different. Not easier, exactly. Mazes don't do easy. But the walls had changed. Where before they'd been dense with writing — my handwriting, my mother's, layered over each other like geological strata — now they were thinner. Translucent. I could see light moving behind them, the way you can see light moving behind frosted glass. The maze was still here. It would always be here. But it had stopped pretending to be the whole world.

I walked. That's what you do after revelation. You walk. You don't sprint, because revelation isn't an emergency. You don't dance, because revelation isn't a celebration. You put one foot in front of the other and you let your body catch up to whatever your mind just figured out, which takes longer than anyone tells you. The body is always the last to know.
