Chapter 11
Chapter 11
The narrator, holding the lost piece in the blue-black light below the ice, experiences a surge of warmth that begins to transform the foundational cold around her. The fragment reintegrates into her body, bringing pain and relief simultaneously. Sirijus's warmth spreads outward, cracking the ice ceiling above and revealing a vast sky that connects all the skies she has known — St. Edmund, the desert vision, the future sky. The maze, watching from above, recoils from this place. The narrator perceives a unity: all skies are one sky, all worlds connected through the Dog Star. The cold does not vanish but becomes something livable — not comfort, but coexistence. She rises through the widening crack back toward the surface, carrying Sirijus within her, and understands that hope persists not as escape but as endurance across all worlds at once.
I held the ice and the ice held me and for a moment — one long, airless, crystalline moment — that was the entire universe. Two substances. One cold. One warm. Neither winning.
Then the fragment moved.
Not away from me. Into me. The piece I'd been reaching for — the shape that fit the hole I'd carried since the shark-sky at St. Edmund tore it loose — slid into my hands and kept going. Through my palms, through the skin, through whatever membrane separates the self from the not-self in a place like this where physics has clearly resigned. It entered me the way a key enters a lock: precisely, mechanically, with the quiet click of something finding its correct position after years of being tried in every wrong door.
