The city hummed a low, discordant tune, a symphony of desperation and ambition that Stephen had grown too familiar with. Each siren wail, each distant shout, felt like a personal accusation, a reminder of the chaos he was trying to keep at bay. Crimson’s gambit, as he’d grimly termed it, had sent ripples through the underbelly of the city, unsettling the delicate balance of power. And Stephen, caught in the undertow, felt the familiar pull of responsibility, a weight that settled deeper with each passing day.

He sat in his cramped apartment, the worn armchair groaning in protest as he shifted. The air was thick with the scent of stale coffee and unspoken anxieties. Outside, the neon signs bled their garish colours onto the rain-slicked streets, painting the night in hues of desperation. Crimson was a wildfire, and Stephen was tasked with being the reluctant rain, always arriving too late to truly extinguish the flames, only managing to dampen their destructive spread.

His telekinesis, once a source of wonder, now felt like a tightly coiled spring within him, a constant reminder of his potential, and his burden. He could feel the subtle shifts in the air, the almost imperceptible vibrations of the city’s pulse. He could, if he chose, feel Crimson’s restless energy, a dark thrumming that pulsed just beyond his reach.
