Chapter 8
Crimson's Gambit
Driven by vengeance, Crimson takes a bold, dangerous step, using his powers recklessly. This action further alienates him from Stephen.
The city, a concrete behemoth exhaling the exhaust of a thousand restless souls, was Crimson’s canvas. Not the picturesque vistas Stephen envisioned, all gleaming skyscrapers and well-ordered parks, but the grimy underbelly, the forgotten alleys where shadows clung like a second skin. Tonight, those shadows seemed to pulse with a life of their own, mirroring the volatile energy thrumming beneath Crimson’s skin.
He stood on the precipice of a rooftop, the wind whipping his dark hair across his face. Below, the neon glow of a seedy bar bled onto the rain-slicked pavement. Inside, bathed in the sickly yellow light, were the men. The ones who had made his childhood a living hell, who had traded in fear and pain like currency. They were celebrating, their coarse laughter echoing up to him, a discordant symphony he’d long since learned to despise.
Stephen’s words, earnest and laced with an almost desperate idealism, still echoed in his mind. *“We can do good, Crimson. We can help people. We can be the shield this city needs.”* A shield. Crimson spat the word out, a bitter taste in his mouth. Stephen, with his clean hands and his clean thoughts, had no idea what it meant to be stained. To be broken. To crave not justice, but retribution.
