Chapter 15
Betrayal's Sting
The Architect's ultimate betrayal is revealed, manipulating events for their own gain. Stephen and Crimson are forced to confront their manipulator.
The air in the abandoned warehouse hung thick with the scent of decay and something else, something metallic and ozone-sharp that prickled the back of Stephen’s throat. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of moonlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating the fractured landscape of their shared past. Crimson stood across from him, a silhouette against the broken skylight, the faint glow of their powers thrumming between them like a discordant heartbeat. It had all led to this, to the quiet, seething confrontation that felt less like a battle and more like the inevitable unraveling of a tightly wound spring.

Crimson offered a low, humorless chuckle. “Knew what, Stephen? That the Architect plays a long game? We both knew that.” He stepped further into the light, his eyes, usually alight with a restless fire, held a peculiar, unsettling calm. It was a stillness that spoke of depths Stephen had never truly plumbed, even after all these years.
