The air in Needling tasted of damp earth and something sharp, like ozone after a lightning strike. Elias, still reeling from the Forest Guide’s cryptic pronouncements, found himself thrust into a world that defied every law of physics he knew. His scientific mind, so adept at dissecting the predictable mechanics of his own dimension, felt like a blunt instrument here, fumbling against the sheer, untamed strangeness of it all.
“The forest is not your enemy, Elias,” the Guide’s voice echoed in his memory, a whisper of ancient leaves and flowing water. “But it demands respect. And understanding.”
Respect. Elias could manage that. Understanding, however, was a far more daunting prospect. The trees themselves seemed to breathe, their bark rippling with an inner luminescence that shifted from emerald to sapphire. Strange, phosphorescent fungi pulsed with a soft, rhythmic glow, casting an ethereal light on the gnarled roots that snaked across the path like petrified serpents. Every shadow seemed to hold a watchful eye, every rustle of leaves a potential threat.
