Chapter 7
Benny's Plea
Elias encounters Benny, a mysterious figure seemingly held captive or manipulated by Lord Jester. Benny's plight becomes a personal mission for Elias, adding urgency to his quest.
The air in Needling tasted like forgotten memories and metallic dust. Elias, still reeling from the cacophony of the forest and the chilling pronouncements of the Forest Guide, found himself drawn deeper into the oppressive silence that clung to the shadowed groves. His scientific mind, so adept at deciphering equations and predicting stellar movements, felt like a blunt instrument in this world of shifting realities. He was a farmer’s son, a scholar of the tangible, and Needling was anything but.
The Forest Guide had spoken of a captive, a pawn in Lord Jester’s elaborate game, someone whose fate was intrinsically linked to the dimension’s unraveling. Elias had initially dismissed it as another of the dimension’s cryptic pronouncements, a metaphor for the lost souls ensnared by the Jester's court. But the woman’s ancient eyes had held a depth of sorrow that resonated with a buried part of him, a fear of helplessness that had haunted his early days in science. Now, the thought of another being suffering under the Jester’s whims gnawed at him.
He moved with a newfound caution, his senses heightened. Every rustle of leaves, every distant creak of unseen branches, sent a prickle of adrenaline through him. The path, if it could be called that, was a barely discernible trail through a thicket of gnarled, obsidian-like trees. Their bark shimmered with an internal luminescence, casting an eerie, shifting glow that played tricks on his eyes. He stumbled, catching himself on a twisted root that felt unnervingly like bone.
