The familiar scent of damp earth and sun-baked hay filled Elias’s lungs, a stark contrast to the acrid, ozone tang of Needling. He stood on the porch of his farmhouse, the wood worn smooth beneath his boots, a gentle breeze rustling the leaves of the oak tree that had shaded his childhood. It was home. Yet, it felt alien. He was home, but he was no longer the Elias who had left.

His hands, once steady and precise, now felt clumsy, accustomed to the alien textures and volatile energies of another plane. He flexed his fingers, the phantom sensation of grasping ancient scrolls and warding off spectral claws still lingering. The hum of the refrigerator, a mundane sound he’d once barely registered, now seemed impossibly loud, a jarring intrusion into the quietude he’d so desperately craved.

He walked into the kitchen, the linoleum cool beneath his feet. Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. He saw his reflection in the glass of the pantry door – a man etched with experiences far beyond the confines of this quiet farm. His eyes, once bright with scientific curiosity, now held a depth that spoke of battles fought and truths unearthed. There was a new stillness about him, a quiet strength that hadn't been there before.
