Sarah watched Alex with a familiar, yet increasingly unnerving, intensity. It had started subtly, a whisper in the background of their usual routines. Alex, usually so present, so engaged, had begun to drift, their gaze often unfocused, lost in the glow of a screen that seemed to hold an invisible, magnetic pull. Coffee shop meetings, once filled with animated discussions and shared laughter, now punctuated by long silences. Alex would smile vaguely, nod, then their eyes would flick back to their phone, a faint, almost imperceptible tremor in their hand as they typed.

“You’re quiet today, Alex,” Sarah said, her voice gentle, carefully calibrated to avoid sounding accusatory. She stirred her latte, the clinking of the spoon against ceramic a small, sharp sound in the otherwise hushed café. The afternoon sun, usually a cheerful presence, seemed to cast long, melancholic shadows across their table.

Alex blinked, a slow, deliberate movement, as if surfacing from a deep dive. “Just… thinking,” they replied, their voice a little distant. They offered a small, tight smile that didn’t quite reach their eyes. “A lot on my mind.”
