The soft glow of the laptop screen painted Alex’s face in shifting hues of blue and white. It was late, the kind of late where the world outside held its breath, hushed and expectant. Elias’s messages, once a comforting stream of shared thoughts and burgeoning confidences, had become a little… different. The usual easy flow had a subtle stutter, a slight disconnect that Alex couldn't quite pinpoint.

It started with small things. Elias had mentioned a trip to a coastal town, a place he described with vivid, evocative detail – the salty tang of the air, the cry of the gulls, the rough texture of barnacle-encrusted pilings. Alex, captivated as always, had asked for photos, eager to see the reality behind the words. Elias had demurred, citing a lost phone and a frustratingly unreliable cloud backup. A plausible excuse, Alex had thought at the time, easily swallowed in the warm bath of their burgeoning digital intimacy. But then, a few days later, Elias had spoken of a childhood anecdote, a summer spent at a lakehouse, complete with details of a rickety wooden dock and the thrill of a first fish caught. Alex, recalling the coastal tale, had casually asked if the lakehouse was near the coast. A beat of silence, then a swift, slightly flustered reply: "Oh, no, completely different part of the country. My memory’s a bit foggy with all the details, you know how it is."

Familiar, yet not quite. The words themselves were fine, but the *feeling* behind them was starting to fray. It was like listening to a favorite song with a slightly off-key instrument playing in the background – noticeable, jarring, but difficult to ignore once heard.
