The air inside the old Athenaeum was thick with the scent of decaying paper and polished wood, a perfume Jason West found far more comforting than any floral arrangement. He stood in the grand rotunda, the faint afternoon sun slanting through the colossal domed ceiling, illuminating motes of dust dancing in the stillness. His gaze, usually a sharp, analytical beam, softened as it traced the intricate plasterwork, the precise mathematical curves of the arches, the elegant sweep of the marble staircase. This was a symphony of form and function, a testament to a mind that understood the language of space as intimately as he did.

But the symphony had been defiled.

Across the polished floor, near the base of a towering, Corinthian column, a series of symbols had been scrawled. Not the crude spray-paint of common vandals, but something deliberate, almost surgical. The lines were sharp, precise, etched into the marble with a tool that had left a faint, almost imperceptible abrasion. Jason knelt, his green suit humming softly, the collar’s integrated lights casting a subtle glow on the floor. His Aegis External Interface shimmered into existence, a translucent green overlay of equations and data points.
