The air in the Grand Central Athenaeum hung thick with the scent of aging paper and polished brass, a symphony of history that usually soothed Jason’s hyper-analytical mind. Today, however, it was a discordant note, a cacophony of violated sanctity. The grand hall, a cathedral of Neo-Classical design, was marred. Not by spray paint or crude graffiti, but by something far more insidious, something that spoke of a mind as intricate and unsettling as his own.
Symbols, meticulously etched into the marble plinths and the ornate wooden wainscoting, glowed faintly under the harsh forensic lights. They weren’t random acts of vandalism; they were glyphs, each one a precise architectural notation, a whisper from the past deliberately amplified. Jason, or Archimedes as the city’s underbelly knew him, stood at the epicenter of this calculated desecration, his signature green suit a stark contrast against the muted elegance of the Athenaeum. His Aegis Cortex whirred, its external interface projecting a faint, shimmering green haze around him, a visible manifestation of the storm of data raging within.
“Anything, West?” Detective Miller, a man whose pragmatism was as sturdy as the building’s foundations, asked, his voice laced with a weary impatience. Miller was a good man, a solid cog in the machine, but he operated on a different frequency, one that often missed the subtle harmonics Jason could detect.
