The air in the chamber crackled, thick with an energy Elara had only felt in fleeting, unsettling moments before. It was a pressure, a hum beneath her skin that vibrated in time with the frantic beat of her heart. Before her, the Guardian loomed, a silhouette of ancient stone and shadow, its form shifting like smoke against the dim light filtering from unseen sources. Kaelen stood a respectful distance behind her, his presence a silent anchor, yet Elara felt utterly alone. This was more than just a test; it felt like a final judgment.

The Guardian’s voice, a low rumble that seemed to originate from the very bedrock of the earth, echoed through the space. "You seek what is not yours to claim. The balance is delicate. Prove your worth, or be consumed."

Elara swallowed, her throat dry. Her hand instinctively went to her forehead, to the familiar, raised skin of her birthmark. She’d spent her life trying to conceal it, to pretend it wasn't there, to be ‘normal’. Now, it felt like the very thing that had drawn her to this impossible place, this place of ancient power. "I don't want to steal anything," she managed, her voice trembling slightly. "I just want to understand. To know why."
