The air in the ancient grove crackled with an unseen energy, a counterpoint to the gentle rustling of leaves overhead. Elara, her hand instinctively covering the star-shaped birthmark on her forehead, felt a prickle of unease that had nothing to do with the encroaching twilight. Kaelen had warned her that the path to understanding her mark would be fraught with challenges, but this felt different. It was a lure, a siren song whispered directly into her soul.
A figure coalesced from the deepening shadows at the edge of the clearing. It was not Kaelen, nor anyone Elara recognized from her village. The stranger was cloaked in hues of midnight, their features obscured by the cowl, yet Elara felt an intense gaze fixed upon her, a gaze that seemed to see past the practiced nonchalance and into the very core of her insecurities.
“Such a burden you carry,” the voice was smooth, like polished obsidian, with an undercurrent of something ancient and powerful. It resonated not just in her ears, but within the hollow spaces of her heart. “That mark. A constant reminder of your otherness.”
