A shiver, not of the cold, traced its way down Elara’s spine. It was a sensation she’d grown accustomed to, a subtle prickle beneath her skin that often preceded something… unusual. Today, it felt more insistent, like a tiny, insistent claw scratching at her resolve. She glanced at Kaelen, who stood a few paces away, his gaze fixed on the ancient, gnarled oak that marked the edge of the Whispering Woods. His brow was furrowed, a familiar map of concern etched onto his wise features.

“Do you feel it?” Kaelen’s voice was low, barely disturbing the hushed quiet of the forest clearing. It was a question he often asked, and one Elara was beginning to understand the weight of.

She nodded, pulling her cloak tighter around herself, though the late afternoon sun still dappled through the leaves, painting the forest floor in shifting patterns of gold. “It’s like… a cold whisper. But from somewhere dark.” She instinctively touched her forehead, her fingers brushing the edge of her star-shaped birthmark, hidden beneath the fringe of her hair. It always seemed to thrum faintly when these feelings arose, a silent alarm bell.
