The air in the chamber crackled, not with the usual sterile chill of ancient stone, but with a vibrant, almost humming energy. Kael stood rigid, his gaze fixed on Elara, who knelt before the altar, her hands pressed against the cold, unyielding surface. Master Valerius, his face a mask of grim anticipation, stood a few paces behind Kael, his staff planted firmly on the flagstones. The symbols etched into its wood seemed to writhe in the flickering torchlight, mirroring the unrest Kael felt coiling in his gut.

Elara had been the ‘wrong one’ from the moment his mentors had uttered her name. An aberration, a dangerous variable in their meticulously crafted plan to contain and control the curse that had shadowed Kael’s existence since childhood. They had drilled into him, day after day, year after year, the absolute necessity of emotional detachment. Kael was the focal point, the vessel through which this raw power would flow. But as Elara’s fingers brushed against the altar, a wave of warmth, unexpected and profound, surged through him. It wasn't the searing heat of the curse’s anger, but a gentle, persistent tide, like sunlight breaking through a storm cloud.
