Chapter 9

Chapter 9 — The Sweet Torture

Nathan wakes to October 14th again, his seventh loop, carrying the memory of their first kiss into a day where Miles remembers nothing. He arrives at Mott & Vine before Miles and uses his accumulated knowledge to fast-track their connection—ordering Miles's drink, anticipating his stories, engineering touches with precision. The asymmetry sharpens every moment: Nathan knows the taste of Miles's mouth, the grip of his hand, while Miles sees a man who seems impossibly familiar. They walk the waterfront, and Nathan pushes faster this time, leaning into physical proximity sooner. When he pulls Miles into the same shadow by the stone wall, the kiss is bolder, deeper. Miles responds with an intensity that suggests something beneath the surface—recognition that shouldn't exist on a first meeting. But when Miles invites him home again, Nathan says not tonight one more time, because he needs tomorrow's loop to push past every boundary. He walks home carrying the new kiss, already planning how to break Miles down faster next time.

Sensitive from sleep, not from use. The swelling had reset. The trace of coffee and salt and that unnamed sweetness was gone, carried away by whatever mechanism rewrote the world at midnight and left only Nathan intact.
