Chapter 15
Chapter 15 — The New Cycle
Nathan and Miles return to the apartment on Calhoun Street after Nathan recognizes the first signs of a new loop forming on October 15th. Once inside, Nathan tells Miles everything—the nine loops, the accumulated memory, the pattern of recurrence. Miles listens without flinching, and together they test the loop's boundaries, discovering that Miles retains his memories through each reset of the new day while Nathan's awareness persists as before. Rather than breaking under the weight of another cycle, they face it as a pair, and by the third morning of October 15th, they find the day has finally moved forward to October 16th—not because they solved it, but because they stopped carrying it alone.
They didn't speak on the walk back.
The distance between Calhoun and Sixth and the apartment was seven blocks—Nathan knew this with the precision of someone who had walked every street in this neighborhood more times than the calendar could account for. Seven blocks south, two west, one south again. He'd counted them in loops where he'd been alone, in loops where he'd been racing toward Mott & Vine, in loops where he'd been trying to outrun the sound of his own pulse. Now he counted them again, but differently. Not measuring escape routes. Measuring how much time he had left to explain something he'd never had to explain before, because no one had ever been present to hear it.
Miles kept pace beside him. Their fingers were still laced together—Nathan's grip tighter than it needed to be, Miles's steady against it. Neither of them looked back at the intersection. The woman in the red coat was behind them now, performing her small circuit of scarf and phone and corner in a loop Nathan could no longer see but could feel in his teeth, the way you feel a frequency just below hearing.
