Chapter 13
Chapter 13 — Absolute Surrender
Nathan crosses the threshold into Miles's bedroom and allows himself to fully surrender to the night, knowing the loop will erase it by morning. What begins as slow, deliberate exploration—memorizing every detail of Miles's body, every sound, every reaction—builds into something consuming and desperate. Nathan treats each moment as a final archive, cataloguing sensations he'll carry alone into the next reset. They move together with growing intensity until they reach the edge of no return, and Nathan gives himself over completely. Afterward, in the quiet dark, Miles pulls him close and murmurs something that sounds like remembering—words that shouldn't be possible if the loop has already begun its dissolve. Nathan lies awake holding Miles's breath against his skin, listening for the sound of morning, terrified to discover which version of tomorrow waits on the other side of his closed eyes.
The bedroom was smaller than Nathan had imagined. Not that he hadn't imagined it—he had, across nine loops, with a precision that bordered on clinical. The width of the bed, the angle of lamplight, the particular disorder of someone who lived comfortably without apology. But imagination had failed to account for the smell: cedar and clean linen and something underneath that was simply, irreducibly Miles. The scent filled the room the way a voice fills a hallway—not through volume but through presence.
Miles entered behind him. Close enough that Nathan felt the warmth of his body against his back without contact. Not yet touching. Letting Nathan stand at the threshold and take it in—the bed with its dark sheets rumpled from that morning, the nightstand cluttered with a half-finished book and a glass of water and a phone charger coiled like a snake. A framed photograph on the wall, too far away to make out. Ordinary objects. The archaeology of a life Nathan had been orbiting for nine mornings without ever touching down.
"You're doing it again," Miles said.
