Lyra sat on a low stool, her fingers tracing the worn carvings on its surface, her heart a hummingbird trapped in her chest. Beside her, Kaelen’s hand rested on her knee, a silent anchor against the rising tide of her apprehension. Elder Maeve, her face a roadmap of seasons passed, her eyes holding the calm depth of a forest pool, sat opposite them, her gaze fixed on the flickering hearth.
“The Sunstone,” Maeve began, her voice a low hum that seemed to vibrate through the very stones of the cottage, “is more than just an artifact of protection, Kaelen.
