Her eyes, wide and bright, traced the intricate patterns of moss on fallen logs, the delicate unfurling of fern fronds, the silent, watchful flight of a hawk overhead. She’d touch a rough bark with a gentle finger, then turn to Kaelen, her face alight with a question, a wonder that never failed to stir a fierce protectiveness within him.

“It’s so alive, Kaelen,” she’d breathed earlier that morning, her voice a soft murmur against the rustling leaves. “Everywhere you look, there’s something new, something hidden.”
