Arthur Pendelton’s office was a testament to a life spent wrestling with the past. Books, brittle with age and smelling faintly of dust and forgotten ink, were stacked precariously on every surface. Maps unfurled like ancient scrolls, their edges softened by time, charting a town that no longer existed in its mapped form. Sunlight, thick with motes, streamed through a grimy window, illuminating the organised chaos. Elara sat opposite him, the worn leather of the chair creaking under her as she shifted. She clutched the journal, its familiar weight a small comfort against the gnawing unease that had settled in her stomach since their last visit to the observatory.

“So, you’re saying,” Arthur began, his voice a low rumble, his gaze fixed on a faded photograph of the town square from decades past, “that this… society, this ‘Order of the Veiled Star,’ is responsible for more than just whispers and old wives’ tales?” He picked up a magnifying glass, turning it over in his hands as if weighing its significance.

Elara nodded, her fingers tracing the worn embossed symbol on the journal’s cover. “The journal entries suggest a pattern, Arthur. Disappearances, always around significant celestial events, always people who somehow ‘threatened’ the Order’s… quiet existence.” She hesitated, the word ‘quiet’ feeling woefully inadequate. “And the dates align with some of the unsolved cases you mentioned.”
