Elara traced the ink, her breath catching in her throat. The elegant, spidery script, painstakingly rendered in faded sepia, had shifted. The entries, previously confined to centuries past, now bled into decades, then years. A faint tremor ran through her fingertips as she turned the page, the paper rustling like dry leaves under a restless wind.
"Arthur," she murmured, her voice barely audible in the hushed solitude of her study, the scent of old paper and dust a familiar comfort now tinged with a prickle of unease. Arthur, perched precariously on the edge of a teetering stack of books, looked up from his own meticulous notes. He’d been poring over census records, his brow furrowed in concentration, the initial skepticism that had clung to him like a damp coat slowly beginning to peel away.
"What is it, Elara?" he asked, his tone a blend of concern and professional curiosity. He’d seen the shift in her, the widening of her usually calm, observant eyes. The thrill of intellectual pursuit had been steadily replaced by something darker, a dawning realization that the ghosts she was chasing were not entirely confined to the spectral realm.
