The heavy oak door of the abandoned observatory groaned in protest as Arthur shouldered it open. Dust motes, disturbed from their centuries-long slumber, danced in the slivers of moonlight that pierced the grimy, arched windows. The air inside was thick with the scent of decay, a musty perfume of forgotten ambition and astronomical dreams long since faded. Elara, clutching the worn leather journal like a shield, stepped hesitantly into the cavernous space.

Cobwebs draped themselves like macabre decorations from every beam and fixture. In the center, a massive, disused orrery lay frozen in time, its miniature planets suspended in an eternal, silent orbit. Yet, it was not the decay that held Elara’s attention. It was the unsettling feeling that the silence itself was a carefully constructed facade, a thin veil over something far more profound and disturbing.
