His charm, his easy smile, the way his eyes seemed to hold a veiled amusement – it had all been a carefully constructed facade, she now understood. A soft thud from the hallway sent a jolt through her. Her breath hitched. It was too distinct to be the wind, too deliberate to be an animal. She rose slowly, her heart hammering against her ribs. Her gaze fell on the heavy brass candlestick on her desk. It felt absurdly inadequate, a child’s toy against the unseen threat, but she picked it up nonetheless.
