It wasn’t a word, not in any conventional sense, but a location. A place within the library itself, a place that, according to the library’s meticulously cataloged blueprints, simply didn’t exist.

“Beneath the main reading room,” she’d murmured, tracing the faded ink on the parchment, her breath catching. “A sub-basement. Unmarked.”

Arthur, who had been pacing the cramped confines of Elara’s research nook, stopped abruptly. He’d shed some of his initial skepticism, replaced by a gnawing unease that mirrored her own.
