The air in the final chamber was thick, not with dust, but with an almost tangible stillness that pressed against Derek’s eardrums. It was a silence so profound it felt like a presence, a guardian keeping watch over whatever secrets lay hidden here. His flashlight beam, a solitary intruder, danced across rough-hewn walls, revealing nothing but the raw, unyielding earth. He had expected more, perhaps a grand tomb, an ancient library, or at least some indication of who had carved out this subterranean world. Instead, there was only this cavernous space, echoing with the sound of his own breathing.
He moved deeper, his boots crunching softly on the packed dirt floor. The passage had ended abruptly, not with a collapse or a dead end, but with this open space, as if the builders had simply stopped, leaving their work unfinished, or perhaps, perfectly complete in its starkness. His light swept over a raised pedestal in the center of the chamber, a feature that seemed almost out of place in the natural ruggedness of the surroundings. It was carved from the same dark stone as the walls, but with a meticulousness that spoke of intent.
And there, resting on the pedestal, was the artifact.
