Chapter 4
A History Buried
Solving the puzzle, Derek uncovers a hidden chamber. The space feels deliberate, a sanctuary or a vault. Artifacts and faded murals suggest a civilization or an event long lost to time. Mr. Abernathy's cryptic words about local legends echo in his mind.
The air in the passage grew heavy, thick with the scent of damp earth and something else, something ancient and indefinable. Derek’s flashlight beam, a solitary beacon against the encroaching darkness, danced across the rough-hewn stone walls. The symbols, etched with a precision that belied their age, seemed to writhe in the periphery of his vision. He traced one with a dirt-stained finger, a spiral that coiled inward, drawing his gaze into its depths. It felt less like a marking and more like a question, a silent challenge posed by hands long turned to dust.
He remembered Mr. Abernathy’s words, delivered with that characteristic twinkle in his eye, a mix of amusement and something akin to warning. "The old stories, Derek, they're like buried roots. You can't always see them, but they hold the earth together." At the time, Derek had dismissed them as the ramblings of an eccentric old man, fond of local folklore. Now, surrounded by the tangible evidence of a history he couldn't readily explain, the old man’s pronouncements felt less like folklore and more like a coded map.
The passage had narrowed, forcing Derek to move in a stooped shuffle. The silence here was profound, a vacuum that swallowed the faint scrabbling of unseen creatures or the distant hum of the world above. It was a silence that pressed in, demanding attention, making Derek acutely aware of his own breathing, the thud of his heart against his ribs. He paused, his flashlight sweeping across a section of the wall that looked subtly different. The stone here was smoother, almost polished, and the symbols were arranged in a distinct pattern.
