The dust settled, or rather, the shimmering particles of what used to be a colossal, animated dragon slowly dissipated into the crisp morning air. It was a sight that should have brought relief, a victory so profound it should have echoed across the ravaged landscapes of Europe and Asia. But as I stood there, my hands still tingling with the aftershocks of the gloves' power, a chilling realization washed over me. The dragon was gone, reduced to nothing, but the world… the world was still bathed in that sickly, unnatural glow. The sky was a cartoonish blue, the trees a vibrant, almost aggressive green, and the distant mountains, once jagged and imposing, now seemed softened, rounded, like a child’s drawing.
I’d done it. I’d unleashed the full power of the gloves, channeled every ounce of my will, and obliterated the beast that had been terrorizing the northern territories. But it hadn’t changed anything. Not fundamentally. The animation, that insidious artistic corruption, remained. It was as if I’d merely swatted a particularly large fly.
A groan beside me pulled me from my grim contemplation. Niku, his massive frame slumped against a jagged, now unnaturally smooth rock, was slowly pushing himself up. His armor, once gleaming, was scratched and dented, the specialized mineral plating dulled by the sheer force of the dragon’s attacks. His face, usually a picture of determined optimism, was etched with exhaustion and a dawning confusion.
