Chapter 16
Battle for Humanity
A desperate, brutal fight ensues within the Voidheart. Bodyguard pushes his limits, questioning his own humanity as he battles the monstrous entity.
The air in the Voidheart was a thick, viscous soup, clinging to Bodyguard’s lungs with every ragged breath. It tasted of ozone and something far older, far fouler, a metallic tang that settled on his tongue like old blood. Twisted metal groaned around him, a symphony of a dying ship, each screech and shudder a testament to the chaos that had consumed this place. He moved with the practiced economy of a predator, his pulse a steady drum against the frantic thrum of his augmented senses. His eyes, enhanced for the perpetual twilight of deep space, swept the cavernous hangar bay, searching for any flicker of movement, any aberration in the scarred landscape.

A low, guttural hiss echoed from the shadows, a sound that scraped against the very foundations of his being. It wasn’t the hiss of machinery, nor the cry of a wounded animal. It was something primal, something that spoke of hunger and ancient, unfeeling malice. Bodyguard raised his pulse rifle, its cold metal a familiar comfort in his gloved hands. The weapon’s targeting array painted a faint crimson lattice across the gloom, seeking out the anomaly.
