Bus to Nowhere
Their hopes are dashed when the bus they boarded crashes into a pole. Forced to evacuate, they are stranded once more, the city still a distant, uncertain goal. The journey must continue on foot.
The bus, a hulking beast of faded blue metal, lurched violently, throwing them all against each other. Ivanka’s heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the cacophony of screaming metal and shattering glass. Mia, a small, trembling weight against her side, whimpered, her tiny hands clutched tightly around Ivanka’s arm. Tamera, ever the pragmatist, had already unbuckled her seatbelt, her eyes wide with a mixture of fear and grim determination. Celine, usually so quiet, was sobbing, her face buried in Tamera’s shoulder.
The impact was brutal, a sickening crunch that vibrated through their very bones. Then, a jarring stillness, punctuated by the hiss of escaping air and the distant, unsettling creak of tortured metal. Smoke, acrid and biting, began to worm its way into the cabin, stinging their eyes and filling their lungs.
“Everyone out!” a gruff voice, belonging to the bus driver, barked through the haze. “Move! Move!”
