Chapter 6
Sanctuary and Snacks
At the gas station, they find some money and quickly gather snacks and water. A moment of respite, but the looming dread of the unknown hangs heavy in the air as they try to formulate a plan.
The stale, metallic tang of gasoline hung heavy in the air, a stark contrast to the fresh, earthy scent of the morning that had so recently been shattered. The fluorescent lights of the gas station hummed with an almost mocking normalcy, casting a sickly yellow glow over the four girls and two very small children huddled near a rack of chips. Ivanka clutched a bag of pretzels, her knuckles white, while Mia, her little sister, buried her face in Ivanka’s side, her small body trembling. Tamera, ever practical, was meticulously organizing their meager haul: a few bottles of water, some granola bars, and a handful of candy bars that felt like a cruel joke in the face of global annihilation. Celine, Tamera’s younger sister, sat on the grimy floor, drawing invisible patterns with her finger, her eyes wide and unblinking. Azarah, true to her nature, was already scanning the dusty shelves, a flicker of desperate hope in her gaze.
“Okay,” Tamera said, her voice tight, breaking the tense silence. “We have… this.” She gestured to the pile of provisions. “It’s not much, but it’s something.”
Ivanka nodded, forcing herself to breathe. The image of people disappearing into the earth, their screams swallowed by the groaning ground, was seared into her mind. She squeezed Mia tighter, feeling the frantic thumping of her sister’s heart against her ribs. “What do we do now?” she whispered, the question hanging unanswered in the suffocating stillness.
