The Rumble and the Fall
Armed with walkie-talkies, the group ventures out. A deafening rumble fills the air, accompanied by screams. The ground splits further, swallowing people whole. They flee towards the nearest gas station.
The air outside, once crisp with the scent of blooming jasmine and the distant hum of lawnmowers, now vibrated with an unnatural tension. Ivanka, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs, clutched the walkie-talkie, its plastic cool against her sweaty palm. Mia, her little sister, clung to her leg, her small body trembling like a trapped bird. Tamera, her face a mask of grim determination, held Celine close, the younger girl’s eyes wide and unblinking. Azarah, ever the optimist even now, scanned the horizon with a furrowed brow.
“Anything?” Ivanka whispered into the walkie-talkie, her voice barely a breath. Static hissed back, a mocking, empty reply. They had split up, Tamera and Azarah taking their respective sisters, to scout the immediate neighborhood, a desperate attempt to gauge the extent of the chaos. Ivanka had insisted on staying close, the primal urge to protect Mia overriding any bravado.
Then it came. A sound that wasn't just heard, but felt – a deep, guttural rumble that vibrated through the soles of their shoes, up their legs, and into their very bones. It was the sound of the earth groaning, of something immense and terrible tearing itself apart. The ground beneath them, already webbed with a terrifying network of cracks, began to heave.
