Parents' Departure

The walkie-talkies crackled to life, a symphony of static and urgent whispers. Ivanka clutched hers, her knuckles white, as Tamera’s voice, tinny and strained, filled the small space between them. “Ivanka, did you hear me? The clouds! They’re getting darker. And they’re… wrong.”

Ivanka swallowed, the dry lump in her throat making it difficult to speak. She glanced at Mia, who was pressed against her side, her small face a mask of wide-eyed fear. Celine, Tamera’s younger sister, was clinging to Tamera’s leg, her own eyes mirroring Mia’s terror. “I hear you, Tamera,” Ivanka managed, her voice barely a whisper. “Azarah said her door keeps opening and closing.”

A beat of silence, then Tamera’s voice again, laced with a new urgency. “We need to go. Now. Mom and Dad… they went to the airport. For vacation.” The words hung in the air, heavy with a dawning, terrible realization. Ivanka’s own parents, her mom and dad, had left that morning. The scent of mint tea and lava eggs, so comforting just hours ago, now seemed like a cruel mockery of innocence. They were gone. And the babysitter, Mrs. Gable, wasn't due until next week.
