The first hint of dawn painted the bruised sky in shades of bruised plum and sickly orange. It was a light that promised no warmth, only a stark illumination of the devastation. Ivanka stirred, her limbs stiff and aching from the cramped confines of the abandoned shed. Beside her, Mia whimpered in her sleep, her small hand still clutching the worn fabric of Teddy. Tamera and Azarah were awake, their faces etched with a weariness that went beyond mere lack of sleep. Celine, bless her quiet heart, was curled up, a small, still form against her sister.

“We should go,” Tamera whispered, her voice raspy. Her eyes scanned the desolate landscape outside the shed’s warped door. The air, thick with the scent of dust and something acrid, offered no comfort.

Ivanka nodded, pushing herself to her feet. The adrenaline that had fueled their desperate flight to this makeshift shelter had long since evaporated, leaving behind a hollow ache. She looked at Mia, her little sister’s face pale and smudged. Even in her sleep, Mia’s brow was furrowed with a worry that no three-year-old should ever bear.
