The whirring of the electric scooters had died down, their batteries drained, leaving them stranded on the cracked asphalt of what had once been a bustling street. The tricycles, their little wheels now sagging with deflated tires, sat forlornly beside them. Mia whimpered, clutching her worn teddy bear, its button eyes seeming to stare blankly at the apocalyptic sky. Celine, ever the quiet observer, huddled close to Tamera, her small hand gripping her sister’s arm.

Ivanka looked at Azarah, her friend’s usually bright eyes clouded with a weariness that mirrored her own. They had come so far, driven by a desperate hope that the city held answers, that the departing helicopters signified an escape. But now, with their borrowed modes of transport useless, the vast expanse of the unknown stretched before them.

“So,” Tamera said, her voice tight, breaking the oppressive quiet. “This is it, then? Stuck in the middle of nowhere with dead scooters and flat tires.” A bitter laugh escaped her. “Just like Azarah’s brilliant plan to get us to the city.”
