Chapter 15
Tamera's Guilt
Tamera wrestles with guilt, replaying the morning's events, wishing she had noticed the signs sooner. Her determination to reach the city hardens, fueled by a need to atone.
The silence of the gas station was a heavy blanket, muffling the frantic thumping of Tamera’s heart. Outside, the world was a symphony of chaos, a cacophony of distant screams and the unsettling murmur of the earth groaning beneath its own weight. But inside, where the fluorescent lights hummed a sickly tune, Tamera was adrift in a sea of her own making, a maelorn of regret that threatened to drown her. She traced the condensation on a half-empty bottle of water, her gaze unfocused, replaying the morning with a brutal, unwelcome clarity.
It had been so ordinary, at first. The smell of mint tea, the comforting sizzle of lava eggs – the mundane rhythm of a Saturday morning. Her Mom, bless her heart, had been humming as she packed, a cheerful prelude to their week-long cruise. Tamera had been engrossed in her phone, scrolling through endless feeds, oblivious to the subtle tremors that had begun to ripple through their world. She remembered Mia, her little sister, tugging at her sleeve, a question about a lost toy, but Tamera had brushed her off, lost in the digital ether. *“Later, Mia, I’m busy.”* The words echoed in her mind, sharp and accusatory. If only she had looked up, truly looked, instead of letting the glow of the screen blind her.
Then came the shaking. The neighbor’s ancient apple tree, usually a stoic sentinel, had writhed like a tormented dancer. Birds, a blur of frantic wings, had erupted from the eaves, their panicked calls a presage of doom. And the cracks. Oh, the cracks. They had started as faint spiderwebs on the asphalt, then widened with terrifying speed, swallowing the familiar landscape in jagged gulps. Tamera had finally pulled herself away from her phone, a prickle of unease crawling up her spine. She’d called out to Ivanka, her voice a little too loud, a little too forced, asking if she’d seen the clouds. Dark, bruised clouds, gathering with unnatural haste.
