The world continued to groan around them, a symphony of unsettling noises that had become the new soundtrack to their lives. The air, thick with dust and a strange, metallic tang, pressed in on Ivanka and her small band of survivors. Mia, her little sister, was a silent, trembling weight against Ivanka’s side, her small hand a vice grip on the tattered ear of her teddy bear, Bartholomew. Bartholomew, a faded brown bear with one button eye and a perpetually lopsided smile, had been Mia’s constant companion since she was a baby. Now, in the face of the world’s unraveling, he’d become something more than a toy.

“He’s going to help us, Ivanka,” Mia whispered, her voice barely audible above the distant, guttural rumble that seemed to emanate from the very bones of the earth. She held Bartholomew up, his limp form dangling from her small fingers. “Bartholomew is magic. He keeps bad things away.”

Ivanka managed a weak smile, stroking Mia’s hair. She knew it was just a child’s comforting fantasy, a desperate grasp for normalcy in a reality that had shattered into a million jagged pieces. But as she looked at the bear, its worn fur a testament to countless hugs and whispered secrets, she felt a flicker of something akin to hope. It was a fragile, almost absurd thing, but it was there.
