Seeking shelter, they venture into a nearby forest. The trees offer a temporary reprieve from the chaos, but the sounds of the collapsing world still echo, a constant reminder of their plight.
The air in the wrecked bus hung thick with the smell of burnt rubber and despair. Ivanka coughed, the dust stinging her throat, and looked around at the frightened faces of her friends and their younger sisters. Mia, usually so full of giggles, was a small, trembling weight pressed against her side, her face buried in Ivanka’s arm. Celine, Tamera’s little sister, sat unusually still, her wide eyes fixed on the splintered remains of the bus, a silent testament to the chaos that had erupted beyond the familiar streets of their town.
Tamera, ever the pragmatist, was already pulling at the jammed door. "We can't stay here," she grunted, her voice strained. "It's too exposed."
Azarah, her usual sparkle dimmed but not extinguished, clutched her worn backpack. "She's right. We need to find somewhere… safe." Her gaze swept over the desolate landscape, the skewed power lines, the abandoned cars that littered the roadside like fallen soldiers. The initial shock of the news report, of the world quite literally ending, was beginning to give way to a chilling, gnawing fear. The helicopters, those beacons of hope, felt impossibly far away now.
