Stranded and Scared
Their makeshift transport fails, leaving the girls and their younger sisters stranded. The world continues to crumble around them, and the path ahead is fraught with peril and uncertainty.
The electric scooters sputtered, emitting a final, pathetic whine before coasting to a halt. Ivanka’s heart sank with the fizzling hum. Beside her, Tamera’s scooter did the same, its front wheel wobbling as if in sympathy. Even the sturdy-looking tricycles carrying Mia and Celine had succumbed to the encroaching chaos. Their once-promising momentum had dissolved into a frustrating stillness, leaving them stranded on the cracked, uneven pavement of what was once a bustling suburban street.
"No, no, no!" Tamera groaned, kicking a tire with more force than necessary. Celine, her little sister, blinked up at her, her lower lip trembling. Mia, nestled on Ivanka's hip, buried her face in Ivanka's shoulder, a soft whimper escaping her.
"What happened?" Ivanka asked, though she already knew the answer. The scooters, their improbable saviors, were dead. The tricycles, too, their tiny tires deflated, listing sadly to one side. The air, once thick with the scent of exhaust fumes and blooming jasmine, now carried the acrid smell of something burning in the distance, a smell that clung to the back of her throat like a bad omen.
