Wheels of Fortune
Spotting electric scooters and tricycles, they seize the opportunity. They ride halfway through town, a brief moment of progress before the tricycles lose air and the scooters need recharging.
The air, once thick with the scent of impending doom and the metallic tang of fear, now carried a faint, hopeful breeze. Ivanka, her lungs burning from the frantic run, spotted them first. A row of sleek electric scooters, their handlebars glinting under the bruised sky, stood abandoned by a shopfront. Beside them, two sturdy tricycles, their bright paint faded but their frames intact, offered a promise of easier travel for the younger girls.
“Look!” Ivanka shouted, her voice hoarse but laced with a surge of adrenaline. “Scooters! And tricycles for Mia and Celine!”
Tamera’s eyes widened, a flicker of something akin to relief breaking through her usual pragmatism. “Oh, thank goodness,” she breathed, pulling Celine closer. Azarah, her face streaked with dirt and sweat, let out a small, excited squeal. Mia, her lower lip trembling, looked at Ivanka, her wide eyes seeking reassurance.
