The smell hit me first, a coppery tang that cut through the usual sterile scent of disinfectant and antiseptic. It was the smell of blood, thick and cloying, and something else… something fetid, like spoiled meat left too long in the sun. I’d smelled it before, in the ER, on patients who’d been through hell and back, but this was different. This was everywhere.

I pushed through the double doors of the emergency department, my heart hammering against my ribs. Just an hour ago, it had been a controlled chaos, the usual Friday night rush amplified by whatever was going around town. Now… now it was a war zone.

The main waiting room was a scene of utter pandemonium. Furniture was overturned, papers scattered, and a thick, viscous fluid—blood, I realized with a sickening lurch—splattered the walls and floor. A low, guttural moaning echoed through the space, punctuated by sharp, inhuman shrieks. I saw Nurse Jenkins, usually so calm and collected, backed against a wall, a blood-stained chart clutched in her trembling hand, her eyes wide with terror. Across from her, a man I’d treated for a broken arm earlier that night was on his hands and knees, gnawing at a fallen IV stand with a ferocity that chilled me to the bone. His eyes were milky white, devoid of any recognition, and a string of dark, viscous saliva dripped from his slack jaw.
