Chapter 19
Old Number 13
Hank Lawson, the retired miner, reveals the dark history of an abandoned mine, Old Number 13. His cryptic warnings hint at a past tragedy connected to the current outbreak.
Hank's knuckles were white where he gripped the worn armrest of his favorite chair. The fire in the hearth cast dancing shadows across his face, highlighting the deep lines etched by years of hard living and harder memories. Bubba, Sarah, Jesse, and Caleb sat around him, their faces grim, the weight of the past few weeks pressing down on them like the mountain itself. Outside, the wind howled, a mournful sound that seemed to echo the desolation that had fallen over Black Creek.
"Old Number 13," Hank began, his voice a low rumble, like stones shifting deep underground. "That mine… it was always trouble. Even before the trouble started." He paused, his gaze fixed on the flames, as if searching for answers in their flickering dance. "They called it Old Number 13 'cause it was the thirteenth mine opened up in this valley, back in the early days. But it was cursed from the start, folks said. Bad luck followed it like a shadow."
Jesse shifted on the floor, his mechanic's hands restless. "What kind of bad luck, Hank? We've had our share of bad luck lately."
