The infected miners are encountered underground, their appearance and behavior chillingly altered. They become known as the 'Black Hats,' a terrifying new enemy emerging from the darkness.

The air in the mine was thick, not just with the usual grit and damp, but with a palpable dread that clung to everything like a shroud. Bubba moved through the narrow tunnels, his headlamp cutting a shaky beam through the oppressive dark. Each step echoed with a hollow finality, a sound that seemed to mock the silence where the chatter of his missing crew should have been. He’d followed the faint signal from their last known location, deeper than he’d ever intended to go on this rescue, deeper into the guts of the earth that had always held a certain respect, a certain fear, for him.

He called out again, his voice raspy, swallowed by the vast emptiness. "Miller! Johnson! Anyone?" Only the drip, drip, drip of unseen water answered, a morbid metronome counting down to something none of them could possibly imagine. It had been too quiet for too long. The radio silence from the deep section had started as an annoyance, then a worry, and now, standing here, it was a cold, hard knot of fear in his stomach. He’d seen enough of this town to know that when things went quiet, it wasn’t a good kind of quiet. It was the kind that swallowed people whole.

He rounded a bend, the beam of his light catching on something that wasn’t rock or timber. A tool, discarded haphazardly. A carbide lamp, its glass shattered. Then another. Each one a breadcrumb leading him further into the unknown, a trail of disruption that spoke of something far worse than a cave-in or equipment failure. He’d seen accidents before, the rough and tumble of the mines, but this felt different. Wrong.
