The world, Danti discovered, did not stop spinning. It didn't even pause for dramatic effect. The pigeons continued their relentless pecking at discarded crumbs, the distant laughter of children chasing a rogue frisbee still echoed, and the sun, that relentless, unforgiving orb, blazed down with a heat that felt personal. It was all still happening, utterly unconcerned that Danti, in a moment of sheer, unadulterated panic, had just broadcast his undying affection for Chole to an audience that included, but was not limited to, a startled poodle, a very stern-looking grandmother, and Leo, his best friend, who now resembled a deer caught in the headlights of an oncoming Danti-shaped train.

Chole, bless her oblivious heart, had blinked. A slow, deliberate blink, as if assessing whether she’d accidentally wandered into a particularly avant-garde street performance. Then, a smile, a tiny, almost imperceptible twitch at the corner of her lips, began to bloom. It was not the horrified recoil Danti had mentally prepared for, nor the polite, pitying dismissal. It was… amusement. Pure, unadulterated, Danti-making-a-complete-fool-of-himself amusement.

"Well," Chole said, her voice a melodic hum that somehow cut through the roaring in Danti’s ears, "that's certainly… direct."
