The sun, a brazen, unapologetic orb, beat down on the park, turning the verdant expanse into a shimmering canvas of emerald and gold. Danti, feeling like a particularly wilted dandelion, slouched on a bench, his internal monologue a frantic symphony of “What ifs” and “Maybes.” He’d been rehearsing for this very moment for weeks, his mind a meticulously crafted stage where he’d delivered eloquent speeches, witty anecdotes, and declarations of undying affection to an imaginary Chole. But the reality of her proximity was a different beast altogether.

He’d spotted her earlier, a splash of vibrant color against the muted greens and browns of the park, laughing with a group of friends. His heart had performed an acrobatic feat worthy of an Olympic gold medal, somersaulting into his throat. He’d considered approaching, mentally ticking off the steps: “Smile. Make eye contact. Say hello. Ask about her day. Transition to… ah, the transition. That’s where it all goes wrong.” And then, as if summoned by his very desperation, Leo had appeared.

Leo. His best friend. The human embodiment of effortless charm, the guy who could probably charm a grumpy badger out of its hibernation. Leo, with his easy grin and a wave that could disarm nations, was now striding purposefully towards Chole. Danti watched, a knot of pure, unadulterated dread tightening in his stomach. He saw the way Leo’s eyes crinkled at the corners as he spoke, the way Chole tilted her head, her laughter a tinkling melody that Danti usually found delightful but now sounded like the death knell of his hopes.
