David's parents issue a stern ultimatum, forcing him to choose between their expectations and his love for Mindy, escalating the family conflict.
The air in the Miller household had grown thick, a palpable tension that settled over the dinner table like a suffocating blanket. David, usually a picture of easygoing charm, found himself picking at his Salisbury steak, the familiar aroma doing little to soothe his frayed nerves. His parents, usually a united front in their gentle guidance, now wore expressions that were anything but gentle. His father’s jaw was set, his gaze fixed on David with an unnerving intensity, while his mother, usually the softer touch, maintained a tight-lipped silence that spoke volumes.
“David,” his father began, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through the polished oak table, “we’ve been meaning to have a serious talk with you.”
David swallowed, his throat suddenly dry. He knew where this was going. The hushed conversations he’d overheard, the pointed questions about Mindy, the not-so-subtle hints about “suitable young women” – it all pointed to this moment. “Yes, Dad?” he managed, his voice a little too high.
